WORDS OF WISDOM

Of all victories the first and greatest is for a man to conquer himself.

                                                                                        - Plato

THESE TWO MONTHS

Indra Jatra

It is believed that many centuries ago, the mother of Indra, the king of heaven, needed specially scented flowers. Indra could not find them in heaven. He finally found them in Kathmandu Valley and tried to steal them. He was caught and imprisoned by the people of Kathmandu. Indra's mother came searching for him and the people were shocked to know what they had done. They released Indra and dedicated a festival to him to calm down his anger.

This festival Indra Jatra, one of the most colourful festivals in Nepal, lasts for eight days with singing, mask dancing and jubilation. The chariot of Kumari, the living goddess, along with those of Bharab and Ganesh are taken through the main streets of Kathmandu with much fanfare. Masks and statues representing Vishnu and  Bhairab are displayed publicly. Various masked dances like Pulu Kishi (elephant dance), Lakhe, Sawa Bhaku and Mahakali are performed at various places. Indra is thanked for the rains and assured once again that he is respected in Kathmandu Valley.

IN THE MASTER'S WORDS

No trace

In order not to leave any traces, when you do something, you should do it with your whole body and mind; you should be concentrated on what you do. You should do it completely, like a good bonfire. You should not be a smoky fire. You should burn yourself completely. If you do not burn yourself completely, a trace of yourself will be left in what you do. You will have something remaining which is not completely burned out.

FROM THE BOOKS

Some snippets

<< Her name was as beautiful as she was. She was a young student, intelligent and full of life. Her face resembled one of those Madonnas on the Renaissance paintings. Only that she had a vivacity that you could touch. Her childlike behaviour and mature gestures would make any boy lose his head. Perhaps she was aware of this fact. Whenever a boy would turn his head to look at her, she would be very upset and ask, "Tell me, what do people want from me?" >>

<< The windows were open and the morning breeze brought in the music of the birds. Sunlight entered the room shyly and lingered on the walls. You lay on the bed but didn't want to waste time sleeping. So you tried of a method of relaxation - to feel the rain wash you with its drops, thus creating in you a mixture of freshness and amazement. This practice thrilled the sleepy cells of your body into life. It was the breaking of a new day and you were just a silent observer of this enormous beauty. >>

<< One evening she came to see you with a group of her friends. When all others left, she remained. She wished to read aloud to you the writings that you had given her. You noticed that she had a very beautiful voice. In her the words vibrated, gained form and took the colours of her sentiments, only to reverberate later in you. Her smile showed her enthusiasm in what she was reading. She found a certain taste in this but you could see the clouds beginning to gather. When she arrived at the question 'Can one ever be free?' you noted a light that flashed. All of a sudden her sky burst in a downpour, "No. One cannot. One cannot be free," she told you between sobs, "The moment we are free, we aren't here - at least not in this dimension." >>

Excerpted from Colours of Life by Kumar R Shrestha

<< Once after a lecture a man asked K, “Imagine you were married.” K said, “I, married? I am happy I am not,” and started to laugh heartily as I never had seen him doing. After some seconds of laughing, he asked the man, “What is the question, sir?” The man asked him, “How should you react when you found out your wife has fallen in love with your neighbour.” K replied, “You can say: We had a good time. I hope you will be happy with that other guy.” >>

<< Once I was in listening to K in Saanen. A young man asked K what to do with the military service. He did not like to join the obligatory military service and asked K what he could do.

K: When you don't like it, you can refuse.

Young man: Then they will put me in prison.

K: If they put you in prison, what is the problem?

Young man: Perhaps they will torture me.

K: If they torture you, what is the problem?

Young man: Perhaps they will kill me.

K: So, if they kill you, what is the problem, sir?  >>
